Flip-flops are back on the streets

A symbol of laid-back holidays, the flip-flop steps out of the sand and onto city streets. Reinvented by designers, it’s now a true fashion accessory.

The budget icon becomes cool

Whether picked up at a seaside market, a supermarket, or a souvenir shop, the flip-flop is a true summer essential. From ages 7 to 77, it spans generations as a loyal companion in holiday suitcases. With its instantly recognizable silhouette, it comes in endless variations: understated or bold, plain or printed, plastic or leather, sometimes even glittery. Affordable and easy to slip on, it embodies the spirit of a carefree summer, with almost bare feet.

But while the flip-flop once evoked nothing more than relaxation and leisure, it’s now taking an unexpected turn on the fashion scene.

At EGONLAB, the flip-flop is carried by hand

Proof that the flip-flop has moved beyond the beach: it strutted down the runway at Paris Fashion Week. During its SS26 show, EGONLAB unveiled an exclusive collaboration with Havaianas. But forget wearing it the traditional way. Here, it’s carried by hand like a hybrid accessory.

Inspired by Brittany, the homeland of one of the label founder’s grandfathers, this version features leather and nautical rope details. A sophisticated reinterpretation, steeped in heartfelt memories.

Havaïanas, on all fronts

While Havaianas remains the go-to brand for flip-flops, it’s far from resting on its laurels. In recent seasons, the brand has multiplied targeted collaborations, teaming up with trendsetting labels. The most recent example? A partnership with Barcelona-based label Gimaguas.

Launched in two phases, the collab first exploded on TikTok, where users embraced the design and created their own DIY versions. Riding that viral wave, the second drop took on a more exclusive form. Unveiled at a Paris pop-up, in a setting blending sand and concrete, the flip-flops were displayed in transparent lockers at the foot of a giant metal flip-flop.

This new model, adorned with tiny key-shaped charms like lucky talismans, was limited to just 150 pairs, reserved for a select few whose worlds align closely with those of both brands. Far from the mainstream but designed to inspire.

Flip flops: manual

Between viral buzz and in-person activations, Havaianas are playing on all fronts. In Paris, the brand also took over the banks of the Seine for a series of summer events, from customization workshops to Brazilian-inspired DJ sets. The message is clear: flip-flops are no longer confined to beaches or pools. They’ve officially stepped into the city as street-ready footwear.

By day, go minimalist: a slim, understated pair worn with tailored shorts and a white tank top. By night, play with contrasts: same base, elevated with gold jewelry, an oversized flowing shirt, and a flip-flop with a thin heel for a look that’s effortless yet refined. For those wanting extra height without giving up comfort, the wedge flip-flop is making a strong comeback, perfect for a full-on Y2K revival. Pair them with low-rise jeans, a microskirt, or a second-skin dress.

Several options exist for a finishing touch: smooth or grained leather for a premium feel, rhinestones to shine after dark, exotic prints or sleek monochrome styles, each pair reflects a different mood..

A slap against the pavement, a summer breeze on city streets, the flip-flop is forging its own path, far from its beachside beginnings. Carried by hand, set on heels, or adorned with charms, it reinvents itself without ever losing its simplicity. Free, light, and just a little defiant, it’s a reminder that sometimes, the smallest step can lead you in a bold new direction. And when it comes to fashion, the detours are often the most inspiring.
