Pajamas in public: what does this new fashion trend reveal about our times?

Dec 5, 2025 | Fashion, Style

Once reserved for the privacy of the bedroom, pajamas are now out in the open. Whether in cotton, silk or satin, these indoor outfits are moving into the street, the workplace and even fashion shows. Often seen as the ultimate comfort piece, pajamas have become one of the season’s standout trends.

From the bedroom to the runway

Who would have guessed that the childhood nightmare of showing up to school in pajamas would one day become a fashion fantasy? For several seasons now, loungewear has been appearing on the catwalks and has even become a staple of modern style. Far from the cozy, fluffy image we usually associate with pajamas, they now come in crisp cotton with an old-money feel, or in soft silk with lace trims inspired by the boudoir looks of the 1930s. Wearing pajamas in the city is not the end of elegance, it simply changes what we mean by elegance.

Wearing pajamas outside is not lazy at all. It takes a bit of skill. The secret is mixing styles. Pajama trousers look refined when paired with a tailored blazer. A button-up nightdress works perfectly under a light trench coat. A slip dress can be worn during the day with flats or at night with slingbacks. As for accessories, the look comes together with a pouch bag, oversized sunglasses and plenty of jewelry.

On the Spring Summer 2026 runways, the slip dress stood out at Victoria Beckham and at Vaillant, where it has become a signature piece over the seasons. Dolce and Gabbana went for a more classic approach with cotton pajamas. Their show even became the backdrop for a scene in the upcoming Devil Wears Prada 2. And Prada sealed the trend with its Fall-Winter 2025 campaign starring Kendall Jenner. Pajamas are now officially ready to step outside.

On Santa’s list

Pajamas may have taken over the runways, but they are also topping every end-of-year wish list. Model and content creator Léa Jul, known for her very niche recommendations, highlights two ultra-select labels: the Italian brand Schostal, famous for its perfect cotton, and the Paris boutique Rubirosas, a true paradise for pyjama lovers. Even Alice Moitié, photographer and influencer, has joined in and recommends a pair from the Italian label as well.

But before it became a French obsession, the trend was already well established across the Atlantic. In the United States, teenagers have been going to school in sweatpants or pajamas for years. The look is more relaxed, of course, but the mindset is the same: choosing comfort and pushing back against traditional dress rules. Boys and girls wear the same kinds of outfits, turning loungewear into a neutral space, a kind of equal ground for everyone.

A statement piece: what this trend says about us

If pajamas are now worn outside the bedroom, it’s not just because they’re practical. They reflect a generation that puts comfort first. Since the pandemic, our relationship with clothing has changed. Sharp suits and perfectly pressed shirts are staying in the closet. Pajamas capture this shift: they make visible our rejection of rigid rules and our desire to move through the day in clothes that don’t restrict us.

But the power of this trend lies above all in the choice to reveal something that usually belongs to our private world. Wearing nightwear in broad daylight means bringing out a part of ourselves that is normally kept hidden behind closed doors. In the same spirit, small objects like soft toys, real comfort items, have become popular accessories, often hanging from bags.

In short, pajamas are reshaping the way we dress. They blur the lines between private and public, between structure and ease, between masculine and feminine, between adulthood and childhood nostalgia. They fit into a broader movement toward more fluid, more inclusive fashion that is less tied to rigid rules. Once reserved for the night, pajamas clearly have a bright future ahead.
