A$AP ROCKY: 50 shades of streetwear

The Harlem-born rapper takes over Paris’s Accor Arena this Wednesday as part of his “DON’T BE DUMB” tour. It is a one-off date in the French capital for an artist who rarely performs live, yet remains an essential figure in the fashion ecosystem. His concert also happens to coincide with Paris Fashion Week, where he will almost certainly be spotted in the front rows of the most prestigious shows, probably alongside his partner Rihanna. A$AP Rocky is a man of many facets: one foot firmly rooted in hip-hop, the other solidly established in luxury and ready-to-wear. Brand ambassador, creative director, designer, above all, he is a muse for an entire generation of men who see him not only as an ambassador for streetwear, but also for the evolution of menswear. A closer look at the style of a visionary artist who moves with the times.

From “Fashion Killa” to luxury ambassador

From the very beginning of his career with the A$AP Mob, fashion established itself as an essential source of inspiration for the rapper. In 2013, he drove the point home with “Fashion Killa”, an anthem dedicated to the major fashion houses. The video, filmed alongside Rihanna as they browse luxury boutiques, quickly became a classic. His music is filled with references to stores and explicit mentions of the designers he associates with and name-checks without hesitation. In 2017, he brought together a handful of rappers on the track “RAF”, a direct tribute to Belgian designer Raf Simons, now leading Prada’s menswear line alongside Miuccia Prada.

In his music videos as on the red carpet, Rocky embraces a versatile, boundary-free style, refusing to be confined to a single category. His wardrobe has gone through several defining eras. In the early 2010s, he emerged as a leading figure in streetwear. He popularised the art of layering prints, pairing BAPE camouflage with ultra-long, tunic-style T-shirts, skinny jeans, chunky chains and caps firmly planted on his head. Even then, his wardrobe revealed an obsession with accessories: statement jewellery, caps and grillz became part of his signature look.

The turning point came between 2016 and 2017. Recognising the opportunity to bridge the gap between the street and haute couture, Rocky made his way into Paris Fashion Week, moving between showcases and meetings with designers. His style became more refined while remaining bold. This was the era when the bandana became his playground, worn around his neck or tied around his head babushka-style. A trend launched alongside his friend A$AP Nast that grew into an era of its own. It was also around this time that he began making public appearances with a handbag, an accessory that has since become inseparable from his identity.

From muse to creator: an impact on masculinity

In recent years, A$AP Rocky’s influence has extended far beyond ready-to-wear. By embracing a form of unconstrained masculinity, he confidently adopts pieces traditionally associated with womenswear, experiments with pink, skirts and pearls, and redefines the aesthetic conventions of his time.

Beyond his own wardrobe, the artist has established himself at the heart of the creative process. He founded his own label, AWGE, and has pursued a string of high-profile collaborations, including with Comme des Garçons. He has also taken the reins as creative director of Puma’s Formula 1 division, as well as at Ray-Ban.

When it comes to luxury houses, even before designer Matthieu Blazy left Bottega Veneta, Rocky had already developed very close ties with the Italian label. He then took things a step further by becoming an ambassador for Chanel. A major achievement for a house that does not even have a dedicated menswear line.

A multifaceted style celebrated by his peers

This unique trajectory has ultimately earned recognition from the fashion industry itself. In 2025, he received the prestigious CFDA Fashion Icon Award, one of the highest honours bestowed by the American fashion industry. That same year, he reached another milestone when he was named co-chair of the 2025 Met Gala, centred around the theme “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style”, celebrating Black dandyism and tailored elegance. A$AP Rocky continues to write his own story: that of a kid from Harlem who, through audacity and instinct, became one of the most influential men in fashion and music.

More than simply a lover of beautiful clothes, A$AP Rocky has succeeded in imposing his own vision by challenging the boundaries between hip-hop culture and haute couture. By breaking down the conventions of traditional menswear, the Harlem native is no longer content to follow trends: he sets them. As he prepares to set the Paris stage alight, he confirms that his true playground extends far beyond music. Lord Flacko does not simply wear clothes, he dictates the trends.
